How to Reduce Cycle Time with CAM Programming?
Last updated: 4 November 2026
On the same CNC machine, cycle time is often hidden in the CAM and fixturing setup. Idle movements and inefficient toolpaths eat up the clock.
Define Machine Limits First
"On-paper" cycle times will not be realistic unless max feed rate, acceleration, spindle torque-rpm, ATC time, and axis travels are entered into the CAM software. The postprocessor must be compatible with the machine/control (FANUC, Mitsubishi, Siemens, Syntec).
Eliminate Idle Time
Unnecessary retracts, long linking moves, and excessive tool changes are the silent killers of cycle time. Group your tool sequence by operation; do not load and unload the same diameter repeatedly.
HSM and Chip Load
Constant chip load strategies (trochoidal, etc.) can improve both cycle time and tool life in thin-walled parts. If aggressive parameters are combined with non-rigid workholding or a weak spindle, chatter will start.
On-Site Verification
CAM time ≠ actual time. Time the first part with a stopwatch; monitor spindle load and sound. With Wiesser application engineering CAM/Cycle Optimization talep edilebilir.
FAQ
Does simply increasing the feed rate work?
Usually not. Exceeding the limits of fixturing, tool overhang, and machine acceleration will degrade surface finish and tool life.
