CNC Vertical Lathe: Large Diameter, Short Length Parts

Horizontal lathes struggle with fixturing and chip evacuation on large-diameter, short-length parts. CNC vertical lathes are designed for these applications.

Vertical Lathe ne zaman gerekir?

When the diameter is large and the length is short (flanges, disks, bearing housings, turbine parts), a vertical turning lathe (VTL) seats the part on its table. Gravity aids workholding stability; chips fall downward.

Difference From Horizontal CNC Lathes

Long shafts are advantageous on a horizontal lathe. With large diameters/short lengths, the Chuck and support setup becomes difficult. On a Vertical Lathe, table diameter and maximum workpiece height are the main selection criteria.

Selection Criteria

Table diameter, max workpiece diameter/height/weight, ram stroke, tool turret/ATC, live tooling requirements, and the control unit. Rigidity stands out for parts in the energy and bearing sectors.

FAQ

Are Vertical Lathes confused with Vertical Machining Centers?

Yes, the names are similar. A Vertical Lathe rotates the part (turning); a Vertical Machining Center rotates the tool (milling).
