CNC Machining for Aerospace Parts: Tolerances and Processes

In aerospace, an out-of-tolerance part is scrap. Single setup machining, thermal stability, and process traceability dictate machine selection.

Why is aerospace challenging?

Thin walls, titanium/nickel alloys, tight positional tolerances, and long cycle times all come together. Heat builds up in the machine casting; dimensions can drift during the shift. As the number of setups increases, the risk of reference errors increases.

Machine and Process Preferences

5-Axis CNCs are used for multi-faceted brackets and fittings; suitable tables and rigid frames are needed for large structural components. Linear scales, cooled drives, and regular ballbar/laser calibration are frequently required. 5-Axis Models ve Thermal Stability View the Articles

Documentation and Traceability

Serial numbers, tool life, measurement records, and fixturing photos are useful for scrap analysis. Share the material certificate and tolerance class during the quoting phase.

FAQ

Is HSM required for aerospace aluminum parts?

For most thin-walled aluminum, HSM and the correct toolpath are critical for cycle time and surface finish; not every part uses the same strategy.
