What Is a Bridge Type CNC Machining Center Used For?

For large molds and heavy body parts, a bridge type (portal/gantry) CNC machining center offers table area and rigidity advantages.

What is a bridge-type CNC?

In a bridge-type CNC machining center, the spindle moves on a fixed or moving portal (bridge). Heavy mold blocks, body castings, and sheet metal dies are clamped onto the large table. It provides a wider work area and more balanced load distribution compared to a classic C-frame vertical machining center.

What Applications Is It Suitable For?

Automotive and white goods injection molds, press dies, large casting bodies, and energy equipment parts. If the part size exceeds the table of the vertical machining center or if the clamping weight strains the machine's capacity, a bridge type comes into consideration.

Rigidity and Thermal Behavior

In large strokes, axis heating and portal deflection can cause dimensional inaccuracies. A cooled drive, rigid cast/welded steel body, and accurate calibration (laser/ballbar) are mandatory. In long-cycle mold work, Thermal Stability directly affects surface quality. Read About Thermal Stability.

Selection Criteria

Table size and load capacity, gantry type (fixed/moving), spindle torque-rpm range, ATC, chip management, and control unit. For mold making, HSM capability and surface roughness targets must also be included in the quotation.

FAQ

Are Bridge Type and 5-Axis the Same Thing?

No. Bridge type is a machine frame architecture; 5-axis is the number of axes. Some bridge type machines come with a 3-axis configuration, while others come with a 5-axis configuration.
