When to Choose a Tapping Center?
Last updated: 4 November 2026
For mass production parts with heavy drilling and tapping but minimal milling, a tapping center offers faster cycle times than a general-purpose VMC.
What is a tapping center?
Also known as a drill/tap center, it is designed with a high-speed spindle, fast ATC, and drilling/tapping-oriented dynamics. It is not intended for heavy milling or large table work; it is frequently used in electronics, automotive fittings, and sheet metal housings.
Difference From a VMC
A VMC offers more universal milling capacity. A tapping center excels in fast drilling cycles and rigid tapping; heavy-duty mold milling should not be expected.
When to Buy?
If there are dozens of holes/taps per part, cycle time is competitively critical, and the milling ratio is low. Otherwise, a mid-size vertical machining center is a more flexible investment.
FAQ
Is milling not possible at all on a tapping center?
Light milling is possible; it is not the right machine for heavy roughing and large tools.
